Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC) is a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital and level IV trauma center located in Salida, Colorado. The hospital serves the visitors and residents of the Upper Arkansas Valley, including Salida, Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, Villa Grove, Saguache, Granite, Howard and surrounding communities. HRRMC also oversees the operation of six outreach clinics in Salida, Buena Vista, Saguache, Westcliffe and Fairplay.
HRRMC was established in 1885 as the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Hospital for railroad employees. In 1962, the railroad sold the hospital to a group of local community leaders. The hospital ran as a private corporation until 1976, when the Salida Hospital District was formed, and the community members who had provided money in 1962 were reimbursed. In 1989, the hospital’s name changed to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, to better reflect the services and area served.
On April 1, 2008, the hospital moved into a new state-of-the-art facility on Highway 291, one mile west of the old facility. This 98,688-square-foot, 25-bed hospital will serve the medical needs of the Upper Arkansas Valley for decades to come. In May of 2019, a new Outpatient Pavilion opened directly on the hospital’s campus, adding three additional floors and over 48,000 square feet of space. The Outpatient Pavilion houses more than 14 specialty clinics to better serve our community, including Allergy, Neurology and Sleep Studies, Rehabilitation, and a comprehensive Orthopedics department, including Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement and Neurosurgical services.
HRRMC received The Joint Commission Accreditation in 2020.
